TERM ACT: CAPA Praises Another Bipartisan Effort to Stop Big Pharma’s Patent Abuse
Coalition thanks Representatives Jeffries, Collins, Mucarsel-Powell and Cline for introducing TERM Act, to stop major drug companies from using patent thickets to prevent affordable generic drugs and treatments from reaching American consumers
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Coalition Against Patent Abuse, a diverse coalition of healthcare providers, consumer groups, patient advocacy organizations, free market advocates and others released the following statement today in response to the legislation sponsored by Representatives Jeffries (NY-08),Doug Collins (GA-09), Mucarsel-Powell (FL-26) and Cline (VA-06). The “Terminating the Extension of Rights Misappropriated” (TERM) Act would address the use of patent thicketing by Big Pharma to extend their drug monopolies and prevent more affordable generic drug competition. The following statements are attributable to Matthew Lane, Executive Director of the Coalition Against Patent Abuse.
“CAPA praises Representatives Jeffries, Collins, Mucarsel-Powell and Cline for their bipartisan efforts to prevent Big Pharma from exploiting the U.S. patent system to block patients from accessing alternative and affordable medications and treatments.”
“For far too long, Big Pharma has abused and manipulated the patent system at the expense of patients. With American patients paying up to 65% more for prescription drugs than patients in other Western countries, we need Congressional action to stop Big Pharma from exploiting the patent system in order to raise the healthcare costs of all Americans.”
We applaud Representatives Jeffries, Collins, Mucarsel-Powell and Cline for their bipartisan leadership on this critical issue and for their efforts to rein in Big Pharma’s exploitation of America’s patent system. Our coalition looks forward to reviewing their legislation and working together to stop Big Pharma’s continually abusive behavior.”
