Niskanen Center Joins Coalition Against Patent Abuse
Bipartisan Effort Grows to Stop Big Pharma From Gaming System & Price-Gouging Patients
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Coalition Against Patent Abuse, a diverse coalition of healthcare providers, consumer groups, patient advocacy organizations, free market advocates and others, today announced that the Niskanen Center has joined its organization:
“The Niskanen Center is a welcome addition to our growing and diverse organization of members. We are equally committed to ensuring that all Americans have access to safe and affordable medicine,” said Matthew Lane, Executive Director of CAPA. “We look forward to working with them toward solutions that rein in Big Pharma’s patent abuse and lower prescription drug prices for patients.”
“Abuse of the patent system by pharmaceutical companies is a major driver of sky-high drug prices,” said Brink Lindsey, Vice President for Policy at Niskanen and co-author of The Captured Economy: How the Powerful Enrich Themselves, Slow Down Growth, and Increase Inequality. “While patent protection in this field is a necessary evil to make invention possible, our current system goes far past that point and increases inequality while suppressing further innovation. We are excited to join the Coalition Against Patent Abuse as an ally to promote reforms that will make the market fairer by making it freer.”
