New Poll Highlights American Patients’ Call For Congress And The New Administration To Reform The U.S. Patent System, Lower Drug Costs

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Coalition Against Patent Abuse (CAPA) – a diverse coalition of healthcare providers, consumer groups, patient advocacy organizations, free-market advocates and others – issued a statement today following the release of a Morning Consult survey which found that Americans overwhelmingly agree that it is time for Congress and the new Administration to reform the U.S. healthcare system to lower costs and put patients first.  The poll was conducted for the Campaign for Sustainable Rx Pricing (CSRxP) which is a member of CAPA.

“This latest poll underlines the strong public support for sensible reforms to the U.S. patent system that prioritizes access and affordability for patients, especially as millions continue to deal with financial uncertainty brought on by the coronavirus pandemic,” stated Matthew Lane, executive director of the Coalition Against Patent Abuse.  “The financial burden of overpriced prescription drugs has been put on the backs of patients for too long.  In fact, many big pharmaceutical companies continuously use anti-competitive tactics to extend monopolies well beyond what the law intends, allowing them to price their products without threat of competition.  Today, American patients are saying enough is enough and demanding reform.”

Key Findings Include:

  • Nearly three-in-four American voters support increasing competition by reforming the patent system to allow more generics and biosimilars into the marketplace.
  • 85 percent of voters believe lawmakers should reform the patent system in order to bring more affordable alternatives into the drug marketplace and lower prices for American patients.
  • Nearly nine in ten voters believe price increases implemented by Big Pharma during the COVID-19 pandemic increased the financial and emotional burden on Americans during the crisis.
  • majority of voters agree policymakers must ensure patients can access COVID-19 medications at an affordable price and prevent pharmaceutical companies from setting unreasonably high prices and increasing those prices to boost profits.
