CAPA Statement on Confirmation of Kathi Vidal as Director of U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

WASHINGTON D.C. – The Coalition Against Patent Abuse (CAPA) released the following statement after the U.S. Senate confirmed Katherine Vidal as Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO):

“CAPA applauds the confirmation of Kathi Vidal as the new USPTO director.  It is our hope that Director Vidal will work alongside Congress to address rising costs by targeting continued abuses of the U.S. patent system by some major pharmaceutical companies that prevent competition and keep drug prices high.  The nation’s largest pharmaceutical companies have enormous incentives to block the entry of lower-cost generic drugs into the market for as long as possible.  The end result: millions of American patients are burdened with expensive treatments and limited options.  Now more than ever, we need regulators to work with lawmakers to pass long overdue patent reforms and strengthen low-cost tools such as inter partes review to generate savings for all,” stated CAPA Executive Director Matthew Lane.
